Fire (LSFD)
Firefighting and rescue: how to join, what's on the trucks, and what a callout looks like.
The fire service is whitelisted, like the police. You apply for it rather than picking it up.
Getting in
Apply on the applications page. LSFD wants people who will work a scene properly — fires
here spread if they're left, so a callout is a job of work rather than a cutscene.
Starting a shift
Sign on at the station and go on duty. Calls reach you on O, the same dispatch the police use,
and 311 is what the public dials for you. Get on shift with /clockfireon so automatic fires
start reaching you.
The work
A fire has to be fought, not simply stood near. Water comes from a hydrant through a supply line to
the truck, then out through a hose — so someone has to set that up before anyone is putting a fire
out. The engines carry a deck gun for the big ones. Tools come off the truck: an axe, a halligan for
forcing doors, a saw, a smoke fan, and hydraulic spreaders for cutting people out of wrecks.
Rescue work is as much of the job as fire. Crashes, people trapped, rope rescues off high ground,
and hazmat decontamination all sit with LSFD.
Getting paid
A salary every ten minutes while you're on duty, rising with rank, and the department earns from
callouts it attends.
Worth knowing
- Water supply first. Everything else waits on it.
- Fires spread. A small one left alone becomes a street.
- Talk to EMS early — most fires come with someone who needs a medic.
