Fishing

A licence, a rod and some patience. One of the easiest ways to make an honest start.

Fishing needs no application and no interview. If you've just arrived in the city with
nothing, this is a reasonable place to begin.

What you need first

A fishing licence, which costs $1,500 and is bought from the fishing shop. Without it the shop,
the sell point and the water are all closed to you — and fishing anyway tends to attract attention
you don't want.

After that you need a rod and some bait. Rods differ: the cheap one is slower and loses more fish,
and the better ones open up as you get more experience.

The work

Find water, cast, and wait. Where you fish decides what you catch — the shallows near the city hold
small fish worth very little, while the deeper water further out is where the money is. You'll need
a boat to reach most of it.

Everything you catch is sold at the fish market. You can also take on jobs from the board there,
which ask for a particular catch within a time limit and pay better than selling the same fish
loose.

Nets are worth a look once you're established. They work while you do other things.

Getting paid

You're paid per fish, at the market, straight into your bank. A common catch is worth a few hundred;
the rare deep-water species are worth thousands. Your level decides which of those you can catch at
all, so the early hours are about building that up.

Worth knowing

  • Buy the licence before anything else. Everything is gated behind it.
  • Bait runs out faster than you think. Buy more than feels necessary.
  • A boat turns fishing from pocket money into a living.
